View Full Version : April 2018 Columnist of the Month - MIZFAN WINS NUMBER 11!

05-14-2018, 07:59 PM
Alright, we're back in the saddle. After a bit of debate as to whether or not this would even be going down due to all the April columns having been lost (along with everything else), it was determined that we should, indeed, proceed. So let's do this thing.

Before we do that, though, how's about a refresher on the rules to this thing?

The winner of the Columnist of the Month contest will receive the prize of having one column posted on the main page of LordsOfPain.net

1) The winner of Columnist of the Month is determined by which of the eligible columnists receives the largest amount of votes within the allotted voting period.

2). No voting for yourself.

3). You must vote for Columnist of the Month to be eligible to win. Should the person with the most votes not place a vote during the allotted timeframe, said person will be disqualified and the first runner up in terms of number of votes gained will be named the winner. One need not place a vote to be awarded single Column of the Month.

4). The candidate you vote for must have posted at least one column in the month of April 2018.

5). When voting, please name both the columnist and, if applicable, the title of their ongoing series in a bold and easily determined fashion. Makes it easier on us old mod folk to more clearly discern the votes, what with our cataracts and such.

6). Main page writers are ineligible to win either the Columnist or Column awards. The exception to this is if they were not called up until the next month. For instance, a writer who wrote stuff in April and was called up on May 3rd would still be eligible to win the April Columnist contest. The prize would just be a bit pointless, I guess. The reason that main page writers are ineligible to win the single Column award is simply because they could, and often do, post said column simultaneously on the main page. This is a CF award, so only CF writers are considered.

7). Please refrain from editing your vote once it is placed, so as to not fuck up the tally. Some circumstances, such as a noob vote for a main pager, are the only loopholes to this one and will be pointed out and handled by a moderator.

8). If a candidate is caught campaigning for CotM, either publicly or privately via PM or social media, they will be disqualified and quite possibly banned. Do your selling through your writing. Begging is lame.

9). Columns about columns (such as the State of the CF or End of Year CF Awards) are not eligible for COTM consideration and will not be counted in favor of their respective authors in the final tally for the month.

10). As it pertains to collaborations, there are a few variations that require clarification.

a) If it's a "tag team" style "traditional" collaboration (i.e.: ETA or The Power Trip or The Mega Column) then both members of the team must vote in order to claim victory as a team.

b) If a single columnist gathers a group of individuals for a "roundtable" collab, only the organizer of said series must vote in order to claim victory. For instance, if Jimmy McColumnGuyDuderson wants to break down the greatest jobbers of all time and asks two of his pals to help out, only Jimmy needs to vote in order to win the award should he garner enough votes since he is the blatant driving force, as opposed to the give and take equality of a "tag team" collab.

For the voters, if you wish to specifically vote for a "traditional" collab team, name both writers. If you wish to honor a "roundtable" collab, just name the organizer of said collab.

11) You cannot vote for a former main page writer until said writer is at least 4 months removed from their main page stint at the time of the voting period. For instance, if Writer McGee just left his main page spot in January and resumed writing in the CF, he is not eligible to win CotM until the May contest. This rule is included simply because it's kind of stupid to award a main page column to a writer who just gave up a gig in which the point was to post columns on the main page. If they wanted to be on the main page then they probably would've, you know, stayed on the main page. We get that the CF has a certain allure, what with the sense of community and ability to win awards from one's peers and all that, but let us not forget the reason why the CF exists in the first place. It's not to placate egos by handing out peer determined awards, it's to find writers for the Lords of Pain main page. If you've had that spot and chose to leave it, perhaps it's time that someone else got the opportunity to prove why they deserve a shot. This rule is only applicable to the COLUMNIST vote, not the single COLUMN vote.

12). In the event of a tie, regardless the number of people involved, the deadlock be broken by means of a re-vote with the tied parties as the only available candidates. Said re-vote will be three days long. If it's still tied after that, the moderator in charge of the contest will determine a winner via a coin toss, with the rights to call the flip determined by which contender garnered the chronological first vote in the original competition. If said moderator in charge of the contest is involved in the tie, the coin flip will be executed by a moderator not directly involved with the contest. That's awfully wordy but actually pretty straightforward. Feel free to ask if you're fuzzy on any of the details.

Don't forget to cast a vote for the Column of the Month gimmick as well. Just name which single column you felt was the best of the month for March. The actual Column of the Month. Just one. NOT AN ENTIRE SERIES. This will help make the process of voting for Column of the Year when it comes time for the Year End Awards that much easier, as well as give some well deserved props to someone who straight up knocked one out of the park in a given month.

Speaking of, here's the list of eligible columnists and their respective columns. Big thanks to kingzak for providing this list and mizfan for translating it for my old ass. I'd also like to thank Rob S. for compiling the list that went unused due to the reset. If you find something that was left out just let me know and I'll get it sorted.

I'll take Deg's Champion Carnival columns to give him columnist.

And then probably the Wrestlemania final for column, by Skul and friends.

05-15-2018, 07:16 AM
I'll go for Degenerate for Columnist and A Newbie’s Guide to All Japan’s Champion Carnival (By a Newbie) (part 2) for column.

Great month for all but those columns were great.

Columnist - Mizfan

Column - WWE Blueprint by Flying Scotsman. Really liked that 3 models triangle thingmyjig.

05-15-2018, 08:18 AM
Column: The Greatest Royal Rumble, Women’s Wrestling, and a No Win Situation

Columnist: Is Type still eligible? Not sure when his call up happened. Him, but if he's not eligible I'll go with Laith.

Also, I doubt it will matter but for the record I posted another column last month entitled "WrestleMania Random Thoughts and Predictions". Probably easy to miss on Zak's screenshot because it's very similar to the title listed above!

05-15-2018, 09:33 AM
Columnist- MizFan. Nice little month for him.

Column- Heelpastor's "confessional"

05-15-2018, 12:32 PM
Sorry DB, I think I did miss that one because I thought it was a repeat! My bad!

Wow, we really did have a great April! Big props to guys like Benny Butts, Kleck, Rob, and Type for absolutely killing it, and new voices like PCM, Heelpastor, and Futurist for really making a big mark. I think I will have to vote for Degenerate though, his coverage of All Japan was just awesome.

Also very tough to vote individually. I really think almost all of Benny's stuff could qualify but I want to specially shout out Ladies and Gentlemen: The Time Limit Has Expired column, which was amazingly written and poignant as hell. Much love also to Blackheart and to HP's column about teaching kids in Saudi Arabia, among others.

05-15-2018, 01:18 PM
I added your column to the list, Dynamite.

As much as I love Mizzie, I'm going with heelpastor for COTM. For column, Benjis 7 Prayers for LU

05-15-2018, 06:04 PM
Tough month. Lots of good stuff.

Give me mizfan for COTM. Button for column with 7 Prayers

I'm not a mod or anyone official, but I do have the third highest post count on the forum at the moment, Prime Time is away and the guy who won is second so I'm gona use my capacity as third highest poster to call it.

Mizfan Wins!
I believe that is number 11! His first in over a year though. Will anyone ever catch this phenom?

For those tracking at home the scores ended up:
Mizfan - 6
Degenerate - 3
Pennycock Mills - 1
Laith - 1
heelpastor - 1

Interesting mix of old and new columnists getting votes, mizfan and Degenerate being two of the vets with Pennycock, Laith & Heelpastor putting in a strong showing for the already strong class of 2018.

As for column of the month, the wide field for April really shon through with a whole host of columns getting one vote however Benjamin Button and Degenerate take the win with their columns: 7 Prayers for Lucha Underground and A Newbie’s Guide to All Japan’s Champion Carnival (By a Newbie) – Part 2.

Hope I didn't stand on any toes. It was a great month of columns, shame it all went away but hey, we now just have a nice clean board to fill with more great columns!

05-24-2018, 06:40 AM
Thanks for doing that, Sam. Imagine Steve would've liked to but it is the end of May I guess and he's swamped.

Congrats to Mizfan too! Much deserved. Commiserations to genny who is amazing. As a mod, if he'd won he could've announced it himself which would've been fun.

05-24-2018, 12:22 PM
Holy shit, 11?? Thanks very much to all who voted, it's always gratifying to see recognition for the Heenan series. I really appreciate all those who have followed along and offered constructive comments or voiced their enjoyment, it's been an absolute blast.

PCM, Laith, heelpastor, I hope you guys find your way back here! And Deg, please keep writing about Japanese wrestling!!

Props to Benny too, everyone should recognize the great stuff that he's been doing recently.

And last but not least, thanks to Sam for picking this up when I forgot all about it!

Great month everyone, and May's been fun too even with the reset mucking things up. Excited to see what else comes out in the next week!

Congrats Mizfan..You truly are the Ric Flair of COTM wins! And it's well earned. That Heenan series is as good as anything sny month!

Thanks for the votes myself and Degenerate received in the individual area.

05-24-2018, 09:39 PM
I think I'm slowly coming to accept that I'm just never gonna catch this dude...

Congrats to mizfan on the big win. And apologies for not getting the results up promptly. To be perfectly honest, I kinda forgot that the deadline had passed. It seems the bulk of my time here on the Forums as of late has been spent dealing with spammers and stuff. Kinda lame, but this place, as always, has been a very pleasant respite from the storm.

I'll adjust the record book accordingly. Hell of an accomplishment, mizfan. Also excellent to see Degen and Benjamin get some props for their always stellar work. It was an old timers' month, it seems. Gives a brother hope.

Though I'm never catching that damn record now.

Hey, newer guys. Consider this a challenge. Thus far in the year 2018 COTM has been won by longtime veteran writers. We've got some fucking phenomenal fresh talent around at the moment. Time for one of you to step up. I know this month is almost over, but June is right around the bend.

Rock it.

05-25-2018, 06:41 AM
11? Jeez Miz, some would say that you are AWEEEEEEEESOMMMMMMMMMME!

Congrats to you and Ben and Degen for their columns!

05-25-2018, 06:55 AM

05-25-2018, 07:24 AM
But who can stop mizfan from getting V12? Congrats, man!

05-25-2018, 08:26 PM
Congrats my friend! Very well deserved!

05-26-2018, 04:12 AM
Congrats to mizfan on yet another historic win! As someone who's worked damn hard to get the COTM wins I've gotten in the past 13 years in this place, it astounds me that he can keep at this clip for so long. My guess is that soon enough we'll just rename this award after him and wrap it up.

Congrats to Benjamin Button for getting the individual award, very much deserved. We technically tied, but as I didn't vote I should not qualify for the award. I didn't even realize that I was getting votes for this, so I apologize for my absence in this thread while the vote was going on. I'm humbled by the votes I got for those columns, and I'm glad they were enjoyed in any case.

05-31-2018, 12:23 PM
For the record, the rules state that one need not place a vote to win for single Column of the Month. The award carries no real "reward" with it and is largely a way to make more visible the best work of the year once End of Year stuff comes around. It's a pat on the back for a job well done.
