More importantly, Rusev vs Styles should be excellent, and I think will outshine Styles vs Nakamura.

I actually agree with that. Rusev has something to prove, whereas Nak is clearly ready to coast regardless of circumstance.

While Nak has definitely coasted most of his WWE run, I do think he put in a good showing during the AJ feud, they were repeatedly hamstrung by questionable booking decisions about their match finishes.

I've come along to accept the widespread theory that his body is just broken down after years of NJPW, and he just cannot go like he used to, which is partly why he bailed out of NJPW before he could be exposed as such.

My only fear about Rusev and Styles is on the character front. It's awesome they've given Rusev this opportunity, one he earned, but Rusev Day is closer to a catchphrase than a properly three dimensional character. And Styles, ever since turning after the Shane feud, has struggled to become as compelling as he was during his first title. I've no doubt they're going to deliver in the ring for sure, but I hope that we get plenty of character development to ensure the feud itself doesn't feel lukewarm - that it gets fans emoting, not just reacting.

How did the match go, and how positive are people feeling about the future on the back of the result?

I'm not feeling as positive, but man I was really ready to see Rusev win. I hope they give him the belt at Summer Slam. I'm ready for everyday to be WWE Champion Rusev Day.

I am really glad he got the chance, anyway. It'll be interesting to see if he drops right back down the card or they have something more sustained for him.

Not really sure he is the right guy for him to go up against but Almas is in desperate need of a feud.

It'd be a bit of a bummer because Almas would have to win, serving Rusev a loss right after he got his feet back under him, but it could work.

But outside of Rusev who else does Almas have? Surely they don’t put him against Jeff now he’s lost the title.

I honestly feel the way they are positioning this, Rusev will be chasing Nakamura after going full face... without English (which is dumb) can't see them doing AJ/Rusev at Summerslam... Jeff Hardy has Orton to wrestle.... I don't think they have plans for Almas right now tbh.

Almas is NOT the guy to feud with Rusev. Almas needs a feud, but against a face, not a cool heel who gets cheered like a face. That'd kill Almas.

How's Rusev getting on. He was flying the last I saw, then I stopped watching and didn't hear his name for ages, but it seems like it's picked back up a bit?

His team with English was fun. Their breakup will probably result in the end of the road for English and a lesser role for Rusev.

So basically, Rusev is still doomed

Seems like the Rusev / English feud has some life left in it. I really hope that it doesn't end in Lana betraying Rusev. The last time those two were apart, things went downhill rather fast for Rusev, and I don't want that again.

I mean judging by how the WWE was salty at Lana and Rusev getting married (god forbid), it wouldn't surprise me as to how it will be booked.

There was something I read recently about comments The Rock made in a promo on Lana about a Milwaukee hotel room (or something similar) - seems unlikely that WWE would even bring them up, let alone use The Rock in a relatively minor feud like this, but it seemed interesting.

So... was that the end to the whole "One Night In Milwaukee" thing? If it is, that felt rather rushed and anticlimactic. Although something tells me that this feud isn't over and something is still brewing here, because that was just weak to shoot a short angle with nothing in return.

What on earth is this I hear about Rusev and Hogan? Surely that can't be a real Wrestlemania idea, this must just be to try and get attention?

Going to give this a bump because it's been brought to my attention that the last time Rusev won a PPV match was against Zack Ryder in July 2016. That strikes me as kinda crazy.

Am I wrong for liking this current storyline? I know it's soap opera trash to the max, but I find it entertaining and I've been wanting a real Rusev face run for a while now. This could be big for him, and I enjoyed how he snapped and took out a future WWE HOF and the current King of the Ring last night.

I dont mind it. Like all 3 involved and enjoy the soap opera nature of wrestling..just wish it was better written and acted lol..Rusev is doing a great job selling it but Big Bob and Lana have very little chemistry

It being a soap opera isn't the problem. It's just distasteful. We already have the "Who is the father of Maria's baby" angle going on. I'm sure they could have ran a better angle for the Rusev and Lashley feud.

Thinking they dropped the Maria thing. She said last week Rusev isn't the father and wasn't seen this week.

Lazyking, a week off doesn't mean it's dropped. Not when there is so much going on. I'd wait for another week to go by without any reference to it before I say it's been dropped.

I don't mind this story at all. It's the sort of angle that's been done since before I started watching, and it's reality based. Not that Lana/CJ is cheating on Rusev for real, but that it's known to be a lifestyle where these things do happen more than anyone would like to admit. What I don't enjoy is seeing her and Bobby kiss so aggressively/passionately. I'm being a stuck up prude, but we know both are married to others, so I don't feel comfortable with them kissing, especially in front of her actual husband on camera reacting. But I recognize that's my own moral compass, and nothing serious past my own taste.

The problem I have is that it doesn't play to anyone's strengths. Rusev's been gold with his charming humor. There's nothing humorous for him to bounce off others with. Bobby isn't great at speaking, but he's in the position to do the most of it. And Lana... I dunno. I just don't get the appeal. I'm in no way saying she's unattractive. She is, but it's not a unique attractiveness that makes her stand out. She's probably a better actress than most WWE workers due to her experience, but she's still not great.

I'm only really going with it being dropped because Maria likely has to get off the road sometimes soon. I honestly think they changed course and did this Lana thing with Rusev because he fits better as face and the Maria story doesn't really have legs once she's off the road.. Now just let Lana be Bob's manager.

Just to point out, this is really the fifth time that Rusev and Lana have been involved in some kind of cheating angle, either long or short-term. Ziggler, Enzo, The Rock, Aiden English and now Bobby Lashley.

WWE loves doing this shit with them, and whilst it's not bad I can't help but feel that the talent involved, and Rusev especially, could be so much more.

Hopefully Rusev takes Lashley to the cleaners and moves on, but I figure we've got 2/3 months of this until we get beyond it.

It's WWE's subtle way of punishing them for getting married, probably. I seem to recall that the WWE wasn't too high on them being together. Maybe I'm incorrect and this is just pure conjecture?

If that’s the case, then why? They’ve had no problem recently acknowledging Charlotte/Andrade on the red carpet recently. They recently highlighted Becky/Seth during the feud with Corbin/Lacey.

I don't know. I would argue that the reason is because Seth, Becky and Charlotte are the "top stars". I just remember hearing about it a while ago. I just find it suspect that the WWE doesn't book or push Rusev when he is over with the crowd.

As I recall, the issue of it more was that they got engaged and/or married very publicly right in the middle of the first 'Lana's got a new boyfriend' angle they ran with Ziggler. So, perhaps less them being together and more just that?

Oli's likely right. WWE is mad that the public marriage ruined the kayfabe story.

Ah, that must have been it. I guess I misremembered the issue.

Rusev's looking in great shape - leaner than I can ever remember him being - and this storyline seems to be getting him back to having the sort of fan connection he had when doing the Rusev Day gimmick. What are the chances that this cements him at the top of the card, long-term?

As I mentioned in a few other threads, Raw is very heel heavy, so I feel his chances are higher right now than I would have believed without this angle. He's been knocking it out of the park with his performance, and it feels like we haven't seen him in a match for months (I know he had a random Raw match that had a non finish).

The only issue is that WWE's tendencies would lead him to being the next face US champion, a title he's already won. With Brock at the top of the food chain, Rusev is still behind Owens on the babyface ladder, with Drew, Seth and Randy all ahead of him in the pecking order overall.
