Was definitely their best game so far in the tournament, which means they are getting better as the tournament goes on and thus that has to be a good thing.

A couple of defining bits of defending too that saved them. Bad defending in getting to those situations, but outstanding in still saving the situation.

There's so many leaders in that team too, not just Houghton. Jill Scott, Ellen White, Lucy Bronze... the team is packed with them.

Honestly. I'm thrilled with Wan Bissaka - exactly the type of player and demographic we should be targetting.

    Chilwell/Tierney next

CB wise - De Light and Maguire would suit, but are probably too good for us at this stage.

Throw in Declan Rice, or even Longstaff and we're headed in the right direction

Hey, you back off! Probably our most important player next season.

Rumours seem to have been running that you fancy Diop from us, for an astronomical wedge of money. Now, Diop was really, really good for us last season but I think for the right fee - suitably high, admittedly, given the crazy market right now - we probably should sell. There's quite a bit of rawness to him that still needs ironing out - at 22, I think that will happen, but given the rumours are suggesting Van Dijk levels of money/value (I think it was rumoured you were offering 65m and Phil Jones, so essentially a 60m value. Supposedly we asked for the cash + Martial which must put the deal up and around 75m-80m?) it would be very difficult not to see the upside of doing the deal.

I'm hoping we sort out with Maxi Gomez wants to sign for us or not soon. Now that Uruguay are out of the Copa it can hopefully start to move forward.

Can anyone give me a scouting report on any of Villa's new signings? Guy called Wesley, Brazilian forward from Club Bruges, or Targett who we've obviously got in from Southampton? Or Jota, for that matter.

I honestly haven't seen much of any of them.

England vs USA in the Women's world cup today. Feels like a huge game actually, probably the biggest in the women's game since I've been following them (which might mean ever, realistically).

Can't say much on Wesley, but I've seen the term 'Brazilian Miroslav Klose' used which is exciting.

Targett was one of the better attacking full backs in the league last season. Be interesting to see how he and Wesley combine if the Klose comparison is accurate, because he might well feed off him crossing the ball onto his bonce.

I'm really, really looking forward to the game tonight. As long as England can focus for 90 minutes we have enough to make a game of it. The last time England played the US we put Lucy Bronze into the midfield and had Rachel Daly at right back, which could happen again - and makes it interesting, I suppose.

Brazilian Miroslav Klose? I'll certainly take that, or even somewhere near that.

Weirdly, first Brazilian ever to play for Villa. We've had Argentinians, Peruvians, Colombians, Ecuadorians, even someone from the island of Curacao, but he's our first Brazilian.

Game last night was pretty tough. England just didn't really pass the ball well enough in the end. America better physically, as you always expect, but also better technically. I thought VAR got both the calls spot on - I'd have no problem with the offsides having a kind of cricket interpretation where they only overrule the on-field officials if it's outside a 'referee's call' margin of error, but since they don't have that.... I mean, it's right, so you can't complain about how close it is if it's still right. And I thought the second one caught the defender trying to be very sneaky. Houghton's penalty might be the worst I've ever seen in an England shirt though, which is a huge shame given the timing. But it would have been a bit of an unfair reflection of the game had we drawn it, or gone on to win from there. Yanks worthy winners and even if they aren't the most likeable team in the tournament, you've got to respect their ability.

Yeah, I don't think we deserved to win last night. We were very sloppy with the ball, although at one point in time my wife said that we'd had more possession, and made more passes, than the US and I was really surprised.

I think where we really struggled this tournament - and I mean all tournament - is that we became bedded to this 'play it out from the back' philosophy. And that's clearly what Neville wants us to do, but so many opportunities for opponents came from us doing that poorly when just lumping it up the field was a better option in the moment. It's clearly managerial, and the team following their tactics to the letter, so fair enough to them, but we could have really done with that ball going a long way up the pitch or into Row Z at times.

Not to completely criticise Neville, though - I think he made an interesting tactical choice last night that didn't quite pay off (it's possible Rapinoe's withdrawal meant the plan was doomed from the start) but he eventually adjusted in the second half and got Parris out wide again when Kirby came on, and suddenly we looked much more fluid and in control in the middle and final thirds. It was after that change that we got the disallowed goal and penalty, all from some good interplay behind the striker.

Ultimately, the USA might not be the most likeable team out there, but they're head and shoulders above most countries when it comes to the national infrastructure behind the women's game. When you consider that over there it's essentially considered as a girls sport and is popular with younger girls, they're always likely to have a headstart. Hopefully the coverage, and success, of our women's team will lead to a groundswell of younger girls playing and in time we can benefit from that at a national level.

11.7m is not to be sniffed at. You wonder what the impact of this will be on the game - every time one of these spikes comes along every few years the next time it goes up again, you see more and more talented teenagers coming through.... can only be a good thing, I think.

Got thinking about Sheepster, today, when I saw that Lampard had the Chelsea job. As our resident Chelsea fan and someone who was never as enamoured with Lampard as even many neutrals, let alone Chelsea fans, I wonder what he'd make of Frank leaping to the job straight from Derby. But, as he hasn't checked in for about a year now, it's hard to imagine that we'll actually find out.

Villa have spent a butt-load of money on the defence. No excuse for the coaching team if they're soft at the back next season.
