    Amazon Lord of the Rings

A few more details are emerging about the Amazon TV project on Lord of the Rings. It sounds like it focuses on a Young Aragorn, which means it'll be outside of the work written by Tolkien, although given how fussy the estate have been in the past I suspect they'll have some consultants on hand to make sure it all fits with the mythology.

Peter Jackson is also not going to be involved, by the sounds of it. And it's still quite a way off. But there is already a fair bit of chatter about it.

I am a massive Lord of the Rings fan and am very happy with a young Aragorn he has a fantastic backstory that can certainly be fleshed out and can help expand a number of settings that are only touched on in the movies. Seeing him come of age and come to terms with who he is will be very cool.

It's been so long since I actually read the books, I can't remember how much of the backstory is in the novels and how much is in the apocrypha. Still, I can see this being a huge success if they get it right.

If I recall almost none of Aragon's past is actually in the proper series. But I too haven't read it in ages!

Here's something picked up recently from the Radio Times in the UK. This is a gutsy call if true and given the source there's no reason to think it's not.

Amazon has revealed that the series will be set during the 3,441-year period before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. In the JRR Tolkien timeline, this is known as the Age of Númenor, or the Second Age.

This means, unfortunately, that we probably won’t see many of the characters from the original series in it, as they weren’t around during this time.

3,441 years is quite a long time, so it’s not totally clear what part of the already established Tolkien lore we’ll be seeing. The rise of big bad ring-thief Sauron and the formation of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men takes place at the tail end of the Second Age, but there’s a whole lot of stuff that went on before that, which could be covered instead.

After reading your post I figured I'd look to see if there was any casting news and sure enough they cast the first role today: https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/lor...gh-1203268175/

This must be coming out in 2021 if they are just starting casting.
